Toxic is a multi-media series. The works are thematically linked through observations of contemporary culture, a toxic mix of self-interest, social conscience and public image. Indeed the saying that "actions speak louder than words" is apparent . One need only observe the brutality of human behaviour, matched against the rhetoric of noble idealism, to discover, like phamaceutical mixes, the toxic nature of contemporary life. Toxic is represented by the colour fluorescent orange, a colour that could be termed the colour of contradiction. While the basic function of this colour is to indicate location (as a marking paint or safety indicator), the underlying nature of the location is bi-polar - in some instances the colour is used to create awareness of presence (as in hunting vests or survival suits), while in environmental terms, the colour is used to indicate absence, as in the invisible lines of a survey (what is there but can't be seen) or the future activity of logging (what is to come). Overall, it is the colour of warning - the toxic result of mixed messages.
